Mathematics

If a student is offered a seat at Summit, they will be required to take a math placement assessment.  This test provides crucial information that helps our team place your student correctly.  Summit offers a variety of different levels of math classes, ranging from Pre-Algebra to Algebra II/III.  Our goal is to provide every student with rigorous and meaningful academic challenge, as well as the proper support for success at every math level.

English

Summit offers a literature-based curriculum that introduces students to a variety of high-quality works.  Each course, from English I through English IV, focuses on responding to and analyzing written works, both orally and in writing, with strong emphasis on the writing of essays and other full-length products.  It is the intention of the Summit English department to provide students with the powers of analysis to make reading and writing about literature a meaningful experience, as well as to create engaging experiences with literature that will foster life-long reading enjoyment!

All students will have opportunities for authentic literature engagement, including author events, field trips, and regular discussions of text.  Click here to view a recent author event with Stuart Gibbs!

History

The History curriculum at Summit consists of three core courses: Eastern Hemispheres, taken in 6th grade; Western Hemispheres, taken in 7th grade; and U.S. History, taken in 8th grade.  These courses are designed to integrate and build on content and skills from one year to the next.  Armed with an understanding of both World and American History, students can now begin to analyze the complex relationships that exist between their own nation and the many other civilizations of our world.

While there is no acceleration in History, Summit does offer a World War II elective class for students interested in diving into History or World War II.

World Language

Summit offers two world languages: Spanish and French.  Our world language classes follow a standards-based curriculum that emphasizes all five aspects of world language acquisition.  These include listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture.  Our world language department uses a communicative approach to teach our students, which involves creating as many opportunities as possible for students to engage in real communication in their chosen language.  At Summit, world language classes are considered a core class, and is a required course for all three years of middle school.  Along with world languages, some students also elect to take American Sign Language as an additional elective.

Academic Support

At Summit, we take pride in offering a myriad of student support to help all Summit students reach their academic potential.  Check out the supports we offer, and their descriptions, below:

Academic Support Elective: Any student with an Individual Education Plan will be automatically enrolled in an academic support elective with Erin Columbus, who is our IEP and 504 coordinator.

Math & English Scholars: Students who are looking for extra support in Math or English can request to be enrolled in a scholars elective class.  English and Math teachers will also make a recommendation if they believe this class would be helpful to your student.  Our scholars electives run for one semester, and some students choose to attend them for all three years of middle school.

Guided Study Hall: While all incoming students will have one study hall applied to their schedule, a guided study hall class is also available.  Guided study hall provides a more structured environment for students to work on school work.

Math & English Lab Tutors: Students will have access to our Math and English tutors during their scheduled study hall period.  Our tutors can help with revisions, classwork, homework, and test preparation.

Teacher Office Hours: Teacher office hours are a place where students can go for homework help, test preparations, or to complete make-up work.  Students will receive an office hour calendar the second month of school, and will be able to meet with their teacher either during lunch or after school for extra help.

Choice Elective Classes

Summit offers a wide variety of elective classes for students to explore their passions and interests.  All students are required to take Physical Education, Summit Seminar in 6th grade, and Health class in 8th grade.  Students may also choose to participate in a wide variety of classes in visual arts, technology, music, performing arts, and physical education.  We highly recommend that students explore the different areas of elective class to try a variety of different activities.  Electives at Summit are held every other day, on an A-Day / B-Day schedule.

Click here to view all of the elective classes that are typically offered at Summit.  This year, we have adjusted our elective offerings to cater to distance learning, and to help students balance a new way of learning.  You can view our distance learning elective classes and teachers below.  Additionally, any core class teacher above that teaches an elective class has an asterisk included next to that class.
